One of the first questions many clients ask when planning their portrait session is simple.

What to wear for a portrait session?

It is a completely natural question to wonder what to wear for a portrait session. Clothing influences how we feel about ourselves, and when you know you will be photographed it can suddenly feel like every small decision matters. Your outfit should feel like you. Not like a costume, and not like something chosen only because it might look good in photos.

If you have ever searched online for what to wear for a photoshoot, you have probably found long lists of rules. In reality the answer is much simpler. The most beautiful portraits come from clothing that feels comfortable, authentic, and aligned with who you are.

In my portrait studio in Sollentuna just outside Stockholm, every session begins with a conversation about styling. Together we choose outfits that complement your personality, photograph beautifully with the studio lighting, and create portraits that feel timeless rather than trendy.

If you are curious about how a session unfolds once the camera comes out, you might also enjoy reading about what it feels like to be guided in front of the camera.

This guide will help you start thinking about what to wear for a portrait session and how we can create portraits that feel elegant, personal, and completely you.

Start with how
you want to feel

Before thinking about colors or specific outfits, it helps to start with a different question.

How do you want to feel when you see the portraits?

For some women the answer is elegant. For others it might be confident, soft, artistic, powerful, or natural. Your clothing should support that feeling.

A flowing dress can create softness and movement.
A simple black outfit can feel timeless and strong.
A cozy knit sweater with jeans can feel relaxed and intimate.

There is no single correct answer. The goal is simply to choose clothing that allows you to step into the experience feeling comfortable and confident.

Choosing colors that
flatter and empower

A common misconception is that only certain colors work well in photographs. In reality, many colors can look beautiful when paired with the right lighting and background. In the studio I work with several backdrops including several tones of brown, soft beige, deep green, light grey, dark grey, and a playful bubblegum pink. Because of this range we can choose combinations that feel harmonious and flattering.

Some colors that consistently photograph beautifully include:

  • cream and ivory
  • black
  • earthy tones
  • deep green
  • burgundy
  • dusty rose
  • soft neutrals

That said, I enjoy working with a wide range of colors. The most important thing is choosing tones that feel good on you and support the mood you want for your portraits.

If you are unsure, you are always welcome to bring a few options and we will choose together during the session.

Shapes and styles that photograph beautifully

The shape of your clothing can influence the mood and visual flow of your portraits. Flowing fabrics often create softness and movement. Dresses and gowns that move naturally with the body can produce incredibly graceful images. Fitted silhouettes tend to feel strong and timeless. A simple fitted dress, bodysuit, or tailored outfit can create portraits with very clean lines and a powerful presence.

Layered outfits can also work beautifully. For example:

  • a silk blouse paired with black trousers
  • light blue jeans with an oversized knitted sweater
  • a soft cardigan over a simple dress

When planning outfits we usually aim for a small variety of looks so your final portraits feel diverse and expressive. When thinking about what to wear for a portrait session you should aim to reflect all sides of you.

Why texture photographs more beautifully than pattern

One of the most helpful styling principles for portrait photography is this.

Texture is usually more powerful than pattern.

Large patterns or graphic prints can sometimes draw attention away from the face, which is the emotional center of the portrait. Textures on the other hand add depth and interest while keeping the focus on you.

Some beautiful textures include:

  • chunky knit fabrics
  • silk
  • chiffon
  • linen
  • lace
  • velvet

A knitted sweater paired with jeans can create a relaxed and intimate portrait. A silk blouse or flowing chiffon dress can create a feeling of elegance and softness. These types of textures add richness without becoming distracting. Keep this in the back of your mind while planning what to wear for a portraitsession.

A few things that are best avoided

There are only a handful of styling choices that tend to distract in portraits.

Large logos or bold graphic prints can pull attention away from the expression and emotion in the photograph.

Very bright neon colors can sometimes reflect unwanted tones onto the skin.

Watches are something I usually ask clients to remove before hair and makeup so that any pressure marks have time to fade before the session begins.

Beyond these small considerations there are very few strict rules. The goal is always to create portraits that feel intentional and timeless, with styling that supports you rather than distracting from you.

Nude undergarments and simple foundations

When preparing your outfits it is helpful to bring a few basic items.

Nude underwear and a strapless bra can work under many types of clothing and give us flexibility when styling different looks.

If you enjoy wearing heels you are welcome to bring them, but many clients choose to be barefoot during their portraits. Bare feet often create a softer and more natural feeling in the images.

Comfort always comes first.

The magic of the studio wardrobe

Many clients arrive with a few outfits and then discover something unexpected once the session begins.

The studio wardrobe includes a selection of dresses, gowns, and flowing fabrics that can transform a simple portrait into something soft, artistic, and timeless. These pieces are especially beautiful when we want to create movement or a more painterly look in the photographs.

There is also a small selection of jewelry available in the studio, though many clients prefer bringing their own pieces. Personal jewelry often carries meaning and adds a subtle emotional layer to the portraits.

During the planning stage we will talk through your wardrobe together and decide what combinations will photograph best.

How many outfits should you bring

Many clients worry about how many outfits they need to prepare for their portrait session. The truth is that you do not need to arrive with a suitcase full of clothing. Most sessions include several different looks, but a large part of that variety often comes from the studio wardrobe.

The studio offers a curated collection of dresses, gowns, and flowing fabrics that photograph beautifully and allow us to create a range of portraits during the session.

If you would like to bring something from home, I usually suggest one or two personal outfits that feel meaningful to you. This could be something simple and elegant, or something relaxed such as jeans paired with a textured sweater.

From there we can build additional looks using pieces from the studio wardrobe. This approach keeps the experience relaxed and allows us to create a beautiful variety of portraits without you needing to plan everything in advance.

The most important thing you can wear to a portrait session

While clothing certainly matters, the most important element in any portrait is not the outfit. It is how you feel. When you feel comfortable, supported, and confident, that feeling naturally shines through in the photographs. My role during the session is to guide you step by step so you never have to worry about how to pose or what to do. Together we create a calm space where you can simply relax into the experience. The clothing is only the beginning.
